Nayina condemns northern chiefs2010-02-03 22:02:45This article has been read 134 times. Northern Regional Minister The outgoing Northern Regional Minister, Stephen Sumani Nayina, has censured traditional authorities in Tamale for selling every piece of available land in their communities to enrich themselves, including government lands allocated for development purposes.
Some of the chiefs shamelessly do not only sell the lands, but engage in multiple sales, which also threaten the peace in Tamale. Addressing the Northern Regional House of Chiefs for the last time, Mr. Nayina said most credible investors had had their bad share of such selfish behaviours by those chiefs.
He intimated that there was currently a tussle between two prominent chiefs in Tamale, over a piece of land earmarked for the construction of a new ultra modern teaching hospital.
According to him, the Chinese government funded health facility was being contested by Tema and Tamale, but Tamale had had the edge, because Tema was already flooded with a whole lot of modern health facilities.
However, where to site the hospital, he said, has been a real problem, due to the positions taken by the chiefs who take the land as their personal property.
Mr. Nayina also noted that the government would begin renovation works on the dilapidated Tamale Teaching Hospital by the middle of February 2010.
The Hospital has not seen any major rehabilitation work since 1974, and it is currently in a very bad state.
On the other hand, the government, according to the outgoing Regional Minister, had secured funding from the Chinese government to build roads in the Eastern Corridors of the region.
In all about eight contractors would be engaged to work on the roads.
Additional funds have also been attracted from the Africa Development Bank for the construction of the Fufulso-Damango-Sawla road, which would also attract four contractors.
Mr. Nayina said plans were also advanced for the government to develop a new road from Walewale to the Upper West Region, to facilitate business activities.
He therefore appealed for absolute peace, unity, and tranquility in the north, to enable government bring those projects it had earmarked for the region to life.
The Minister reiterated his call on the Judicial Committee of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs to do everything possible to dispose off the Bimbilla Chieftaincy Dispute that was brought before it some seven years ago.
The President of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, Nayiri-Na Bohugu Mahami Abdullai Segriga, implored the house to observe a minute’s silence in honour of the former President of the House, the Late Yagbonwura Bawa Doshie, also the Overlord of Gonja traditional area, who passed away on January 1 this year.
Supporting the government’s agricultural policies which had increased food productivity in the region, Nayiri Na challenged his colleague chiefs to make lands accessible to the youth and investors. He called on the government to put in place appropriate measures to buy the produce from farmers to create buffer stock, export, and eliminate middle men, by rewarding farmers with good prices.
The Nayiri Na, who commended the government for the introduction of the Savanna Accelerated Development Authority (SADA), called for the swift passage of the SADA bill into law.
He appealed to the government to expand the Youth in Agriculture Programme to cover the entire Northern Region, to reduce the high unemployment rate and poverty among the people.
More importantly, the Northern Regional House of Chiefs President said, about 80% of the sheanuts in the region remained un-harvested and left to waste, because there was no comprehensive programme for the shea industry.
